BNB Chain Takes Legal Action Against Former Employee Over Wallet Used to Launch Meme Coin

BNB Chain has filed a lawsuit against a former employee after a cryptocurrency wallet created for an educational tutorial was allegedly reused to launch a meme coin without the company’s approval.

According to BNB Chain, the wallet was never intended for public use beyond demonstrating how to create a token during a training video. The company says it neither owns nor endorses the newly launched token and has no control over the wallet involved.

Tutorial Wallet Resurfaced After Employee Departure

The wallet in question was reportedly created as part of a BNB Chain instructional video designed to teach users how to issue a token. The token served only as an example and was not intended to be traded or developed into a live project.

BNB Chain claims that after the employee left the organization, they retained the wallet’s seed phrase—the recovery words that provide permanent access to a crypto wallet. Using those recovery credentials, the former employee allegedly regenerated the wallet’s private key and regained access.

A wallet address was previously created by a former employee, which they then used to generate a token, as part of a video tutorial. That individual is no longer with the company as part of this incident.

The incident underscores one of the long-standing security concerns surrounding self-custodied crypto wallets. Since possession of a seed phrase grants complete control over wallet assets, organizations face risks if recovery credentials are not securely managed when employees leave.

Company Denies Any Connection to the Meme Coin

After the wallet became active again in connection with a newly issued meme token, BNB Chain quickly distanced itself from the project.

In a public statement, the company said it did not create, authorize, promote, or participate in the development of the token and emphasized that it has no authority over either the wallet or the asset associated with it.

The clarification was important because crypto traders often interpret wallet addresses connected to well-known blockchain projects as a sign of official backing. Even indirect associations can fuel speculative buying, particularly in the highly volatile meme coin market.

Similar confusion has emerged before within the Binance ecosystem, including periods of intense speculation surrounding meme tokens linked by rumor to Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ). Commenting on the latest incident, CZ described the former employee as “basically a scammer.”

Legal Proceedings Underway

BNB Chain has confirmed that it has initiated legal action and reported the matter to law enforcement. However, the company has not disclosed the identity of the former employee, the name of the meme token, or the jurisdiction where the lawsuit has been filed.

The dispute presents an unusual legal question for the cryptocurrency industry. While many crypto-related lawsuits involve exchange hacks, fraud, or stolen digital assets, this case centers on the alleged unauthorized use of a wallet recovery phrase created for internal educational purposes.

The outcome could help clarify how courts view ownership and responsibility for crypto wallet credentials after an employee leaves a company. Depending on the legal arguments presented, the case may influence future policies governing wallet management, employee offboarding, and custody procedures across the digital asset sector.
