Could Tesla and SpaceX Unite to Create the World’s Most Powerful AI Company?

ARK Invest founder and CEO Cathie Wood believes that Elon Musk’s companies, Tesla and SpaceX, could one day come together to form what she describes as the world’s most influential artificial intelligence company. She argues that businesses such as autonomous robotaxis, humanoid robots like Optimus, space-based computing infrastructure, and SpaceX’s AI initiatives represent multi-trillion-dollar opportunities in the years ahead.

The idea of combining Tesla and SpaceX is not entirely new. Reports over the past year have suggested that Musk has discussed the possibility internally. A CNBC report published in May 2026 indicated that some Tesla employees expected the two companies to become more closely integrated over time, reflecting growing speculation about a future merger.

JUST IN: Cathie Wood says Tesla and SpaceX will “ultimately combine” into what she calls the most powerful AI company in the world.

Tesla and SpaceX already share a long history of collaboration. The companies have supported one another during periods of limited computing capacity and power constraints, while also working together on hardware and engineering projects. Tesla has supplied components and solar technology to SpaceX, relied on the aerospace company for specialized materials used in the Cybertruck, and made use of SpaceX’s private aviation resources. In addition, both firms share leadership connections, including Elon Musk and several board members.

Artificial intelligence could be the strongest motivation for bringing the two businesses under one umbrella. Tesla’s autonomous driving technology and robotics efforts depend heavily on advanced AI, while SpaceX has expanded its own AI ambitions following the integration of xAI earlier this year. Venture capitalist Tomasz Tunguz has noted that both companies face unique but similarly demanding computing challenges: Tesla must operate powerful AI systems inside vehicles with strict limits on power, cooling, latency, and cost, whereas SpaceX must build computing systems capable of surviving the harsh conditions of space, including radiation, thermal extremes, and limited energy resources.

Despite the strategic appeal, a merger would not be straightforward. Structuring the transaction, determining which company would lead the combined organization, and resolving ownership and stock-swap arrangements would present significant financial and legal complexities. For now, the prospect remains speculative, but the growing overlap between the two companies continues to fuel discussion about what such a partnership could mean for the future of AI and advanced technology.
